Job Description


Wearable Sensing is a San Diego-based company focused on the development of wearable sensors technology and its potential applications. Our first products are wearable wireless brain activity monitoring systems that are opening the door to innovative applications in commercial domains including neuroergonomics, augmented cognition, Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI), neuromarketing, peak-performance training, etc. Wearable Sensing is a start-up that was founded in March 2013 and is actively growing.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Intern will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals on real-world products and get hands-on experience in all aspects of design, prototyping and manufacturing of new headsets and related products, for a range of BCI applications. This internship presents the opportunity to work on a wide range of tasks, from designing parts, developing new manufacturing methodologies, assembling devices, exploring outsourcing capabilities, writing efficient assembly protocols, and implementing rigorous Quality Assurance procedures. Possible activities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Participate in product development, including prototype iterative design and failure analysis.
  • Design and prototyping of a new helmet that interfaces with existing headsets.
  • Mechanical assembly, wiring, and testing of headsets and systems.
  • Assembly, soldering, and testing of electronic boards, sensors, and electrodes.
  • Typical unit test, system test, field test and other support activities.
  • Troubleshooting manufacturing bugs and repair of damaged products.
  • Design and development of new product packaging.
  • Document assembly and testing procedures and convert design release engineering documentation to manufacturing documentation.


SKILLS THE INTERN MUST HAVE:

  • Solid manufacturing or mechanical engineering base of knowledge
  • Experience/proficiency with SolidWorks and strong understanding of basic material properties, stress and strain, and dynamic force analysis
  • Knowledge of various manufacturing processes from plastic molding to machine shop tooling.
  • Basic Electrical Theory - A fundamental understanding of electrical theory, including knowledge of circuits, voltage, current, resistance, and basic electrical components. The ability to apply this knowledge to practical tasks is essential.
  • Proficiency in Using Common Engineering Tools and Equipment - Competency in using and maintaining common engineering tools and equipment, such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, soldering equipment, and other relevant instruments.
  • Hands-on experience with mechanical assembly, including the ability to modify mechanical systems and components.
  • Hands-on experience and knowledge in equipment maintenance and repair, with a focus on ensuring optimal functionality. Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues during testing.
  • Understanding of technical documentation requirements and document controls.


      STUDENT QUALIFICATIONS:

      • At least 1 semester of math and 1-2 assembly or engineering technician courses.
      • Self-driven individual who is meticulous and driven to excellence in workmanship.
      • Responsible and independent worker who strives to complete projects on time.
      • Motivated to seek new creative solutions to cutting-edge projects and works with a sense of urgency to resolve issues and complete project goals on time.
      • Fluency in English, with good communication and demonstrated technical writing skills.
      • Flexible team-player who is capable of following instructions.


      This internship is available through the Border Region Talent Pipeline Grant, which has its own eligibility criteria. Interested participants must meet these requirements and apply accordingly.
