In honor of International Women’s Day 2023, the LebNet Women in Tech (WiT) Community celebrated this year 25 women who joined LebNet WiT’s Fellowship program. The program equips the next generation of Lebanese women technologists with the skills needed to succeed in tech careers post-university. State of Funding in the Bay Area In collaboration with TechWadi, LebNet Bay Area hosted a panel on March 8th discussing all things related to the venture and startup ecosystem in 2023. Jeffrey Akiki, LebNet Bay Area steering committee member and Growth Lead at On Deck, moderated the panel which featured Urvashi Barooah from Redpoint Ventures, Jacob Conger from Headline, and Fawzi Itani from Forerunner. They talked about how the market has shifted in the past year and how that has impacted the ecosystem as a whole. They also discussed different approaches that aspiring founders could use to validate their ideas, run a fundraising process, and pick an investor. Networking & fun in the Bay Area On March 16th, the Bay Area community hosted another one of its happy hour events. The event was well attended with over 17 people showing up to network, meet up and catch up on our community’s latest news. Montreal Community’s take on Cybersecurity trends & threats LebNet Montreal’s panel on March 16th was all about cybersecurity and attracted about 45 participants. Fadi Joseph, LebNet Canada President, shared the organization’s vision to bridge cybersecurity talents and businesses between Canada and Lebanon in 2023; Benoit Tremblay, a CyberCrisis manager, presented the human management aspect of cybersecurity in an organization; and Marcel Labelle, manager at Cybereco, introduced its company as a non-profit organization that brings together experts in cybersecurity from across Canada. The goal of Cybereco is to improve the cyber-resilience of businesses and individuals in addition to the development of effective technological solutions for a prosperous and secure economy. The event was sponsored by Hypertec, a Montreal based rapidly growing global provider of innovative information technology solutions. The Lebanese Startup Ecosystem evolution since the crisis In partnership with LebNet, Viaka’s Founder Hani Azzam, hosted on March 25th a discussion between Timothy Motte, author of "The Lebanese startup ecosystem hasn't failed. It's just not solely in Lebanon anymore." and Sami Saad, VP of Investments of IM Fndg, covering the Lebanese startup ecosystem. Those who missed the webinar can still watch it here. LebNet awards a $1,000 STEM Scholarship On March 10th, The Lebanese Collegiate Network hosted its 15th Annual Convention at Arizona State University (ASU), in sponsorship with LebNet Arizona. The event awarded a $1,000 LebNet STEM Scholarship to Peter Serhan, who started his studies at AUB then transferred to ASU. The scholarship will help him pursue his passion for technology and engineering. LebNet wishes him continued success in his journey.
